I don’t know about you, but I have a love-hate relationship with makeup. I do not mind that extra glow, and can never say no to brows that are just the right amount of snatched, with an arc to die for. The problem comes in when I am running late, and like all good things, good makeup (even my go-to: no-makeup makeup) takes time.

According to a Glamour editor on going makeup-free, “Makeup should be a fun accessory you can put on when you feel like it— not something so baked into your everyday rituals that you don’t recognize (or like) yourself without it.”

Maybe you want to drop makeup altogether, skip it every now and then, or you just want more time in the morning without worrying about someone asking if you are sick or tired. Either way, going makeup-free will liberate more than just your skin cells. Your wallet will thank you too.

Here are 10 no-makeup tips that will not only add an extra 15 minutes to your morning routine, but will also ensure that your skin stays healthy and gorgeous with minimal effort.

 

TIP #1

Hydrate

Everyone with great skin attributes it to drinking “a lot of water”— which you probably roll your eyes to. A study demonstrates how having water in your regular diet can have a positive impact on your skin. Drinking water not only flushes out toxins and impurities, but it also reduces puffiness. Keep it at the recommended amount, and drink your way to healthy and vibrant skin. You can also hydrate your skin from the outside, by using facial oils to seal in moisture.

Cleanse your skin

Considering all the dirt and pollution our skin gets exposed to throughout the day, cleansing should be the most basic and essential step in any beauty routine. Daily cleansing helps in ridding the skin of excessive oil and build-up left over which leads to breakouts and/or lackluster complexion.

Combat dark circles

According to a 2016 study, it is a societal perception that dark circles contribute to a tired, aged and even sad appearance. Additionally, on an average, a woman spends a large percentage of makeup expenditure on under-eye concealers. Therefore, if you are going to ditch makeup, you are going to have to combat dark circles. If catching up on sleep does not help, try shrinking dilated blood vessels by applying a cold compress or soaking with tea bags.

Get enough sleep

When it comes to a healthy appearance, beauty sleep should never be underestimated. Asides from minimizing dark circles, a good rest contributes to a glowing complexion and fewer finer lines. Expert advice recommends that healthy adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.

Exfoliate

When done the right way, regular exfoliation effectively unclogs your pores. This in turn allows your other skincare products to penetrate more deeply. Exfoliation also increases cell turnover by removing dead skin, which leaves your skin extra smooth and naturally radiant.

Apply moisturizer as highlighter

When you are not wearing makeup, to add a pop here and an extra shine there, all you need is your regular moisturizer. Apply a little extra where you would normally use highlighter– under your brow bone, cheekbones, and cupid’s bow.
